ENABLING TETHERING ON YOUR IPHONE AND SETTING UP MMS ON SOUTH AFRICA’S MTN AND VODACOM NETWORKS

By following these easy steps you will be able to tether your iPhone and setup MMS on the Vodacom and MTN networks.

Tethering your iPhone will enable your laptop to use your iPhone’s wireless data connection to go online working like a wireless modem. This can be done wirelessly using Bluetooth or by USB. While your iPhone is connected to your laptop you will still be able to make and receive calls.

To ensure that the process is successful ensure that your iPhone has the official version of the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware. You can do this by connecting to iTunes and then downloading the software. The process will take some time.

You must do the tethering first and then setup the MMS because the tethering configuration file rewrites the MMS settings. Just follow these easy steps:

Tethering your iPhone -  this will enable you to connect your computer to the internet through your iPhone

Navigate to http://wan.to/iphone and then download and install the APN settings for Vodacom or MTN by selecting the appropriate download button. After the installation is complete, an “Internet Tethering” option will appear under General -> Network in the iPhone’s Settings application. If you have Vodacom it will say that this is not an official source – just ignore this and continue.

Enablinge MMS

Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and change the settings to:

Cellular Data (Vodacom):
APN: iphone.vodacom.net

MMS (Vodacom):
APN: mms.vodacom.net
Username: (blank)
Password: (blank)
MMSC: mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za
MMS Proxy: 196.006.128.013:8080

MMS (MTN):
APN: myMTN
Username: mtnmms
Password: mtnmms
MMSC: http://mms.mtn.co.za/mms/wapenc
MMS Proxy: 196.11.240.241:8080

Now reboot your iPhone by holding down the SLEEP / WAKE button until a "slide to power off" button appears, sliding the slider, then holding the SLEEP/ WAKE button again for a few seconds until the device turns back on.

Since the iPhone’s launch in January 2007 it has taken the world by storm selling well over 10 million units. Time magazine named the iPhone the Invention of the Year in 2007.
